UPCOMING EVENTS
APRIL 18th-24th
Earth week was created to expand knowledge of sustainability on the UW-Madison campus and to celebrate the beautiful planet we live on. Through a series of daily events surrounding Earth Day, we challenge you to join the organizations working to make Madison a greener place.
EARTH DAY HISTORY
A WISCONSIN BORN TRADITION
Moved by the passion behind UW-Madison student war protests and the disastrous Santa Barbra oil spill in 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson pushed for a national movement and environmental teach in to occur on April 22, 1970. The national coordinator and another Wisconsin native, Denis Hayes, later took the movement international to 141 countries in 1990. Today Earth Day is celebrated by over a billion people, making it the largest secular observance in the world.
